Step Twelve states, “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”
For me, a spiritual awakening takes place at each step of recovery. Step One reminds me that trying to change what I cannot control leads to chaos and confusion. Step Two reminds me that there are resources beyond my control to do for me what I could not do for myself. Step Three provides me with an opportunity to trust in that “Good Orderly Direction” instead of trying harder to solve problems with the same tools that didn’t work in the first place.
The World Service Office and our links of service provide us with tried and true resources to help us regain control of our lives. One example is our Public Outreach Toolkit, which is available at the Al-Anon website. As we try to carry the message to others, we can rely on the Steps, Traditions, and Concepts and learn to apply these ideas to all areas of our lives.
Al-Anon Public Outreach has been guided by the 1966 Statement on Public Relations which can be found and studied in the World Service Manual, starting on page 119.
